From Monday 2nd to Friday 6th November, we’re proud to be supporting Meals on Wheels Week 2026, organised by the National Association of Care Catering (NACC).
This year’s message is a very important one: “More Than Just a Meal.”
And here at Age Concern Sandwich, we know just how true that is.
Every week, our Meals on Wheels service brings freshly prepared food to people in our local community. But behind every meal is something much bigger – independence, reassurance, regular human contact and, very often, a friendly face arriving at just the right time.
So much more than food
Good nutrition and hydration are hugely important to our health and wellbeing, particularly as we get older. Having a regular, nutritious meal can help people remain well, maintain their strength and continue living independently in their own homes.
But Meals on Wheels can provide much more than good nutrition.
For some customers, the knock at the door and a familiar, friendly face may be an important part of their day. It provides an opportunity for a quick chat, a little human contact and reassurance that somebody is there.
Across the country, Meals on Wheels drivers can also be an important extra pair of eyes. Regular contact can mean that changes in someone’s wellbeing, or potential concerns such as a cold home, a fall or something simply not seeming quite right, are noticed before a small problem becomes a much bigger one.
That is why NACC describes Meals on Wheels as a service with social, psychological and preventative benefits, as well as nutritional ones.
It can help people to remain safe, well, connected and independent at home – and it can provide valuable reassurance to families and carers too.
Meals on Wheels at Age Concern Sandwich
At Age Concern Sandwich, our kitchen team prepares a varied selection of tasty, home-cooked meals, with our two-course Meals on Wheels service available from £9.50.
Our menus include plenty of traditional favourites alongside different dishes throughout the week, and we can cater for a range of dietary requirements.
We also offer our Teatime Treat for £7.50, with sandwiches, a sausage roll and a slice of cake.
And for customers who would like the convenience of having good, home-cooked food ready for another day, we also offer a growing range of freshly prepared frozen and microwaveable meals.
Our frozen main courses are £5, with desserts available for £2, and they are ideal for keeping in the freezer for weekends, evenings or simply for those days when you would rather not cook.
Current dishes can include favourites such as Roast Beef, Minced Beef Cobbler, Lamb Hot Pot, Sausage, Mash & Peas, Liver & Bacon and Chicken, Ham & Leek Pie, with desserts including Bread Pudding, Gypsy Tart and Coconut & Cherry Sponge with custard.
It is another way we can help make nutritious, home-cooked food easy and accessible, while giving people more choice and flexibility around when they enjoy it.
Whether a meal is delivered hot to the door or taken home frozen for another day, there is one ingredient that runs through everything we do – care.
A very special thank you to our Volunteer Delivery Drivers
Meals on Wheels Week gives us the perfect opportunity to say an enormous THANK YOU to the wonderful Volunteer Delivery Drivers who make our service possible.
They give their time, use their cars and head out on their rounds to make sure our customers receive their meals – come rain, shine or one of those particularly chilly Sandwich mornings!
But they deliver far more than a container of food.
They deliver a smile, conversation, familiarity and reassurance.
Our customers get to know their regular drivers, and our drivers get to know them too. It is that human connection which demonstrates perfectly why Meals on Wheels really is more than just a meal.
We are incredibly grateful to every one of our volunteer drivers. Quite simply, without them, we could not provide the service that we do.
And a huge thank you to our kitchen team
Of course, before a single meal can leave the building, there is another very important team working behind the scenes.
A huge thank you must go to our fantastic kitchen team, who plan, prepare, cook and portion the meals that head out into our community.
Day after day, they produce comforting, nourishing, home-cooked food for our Meals on Wheels customers, prepare our frozen meal range and look after everyone joining us for lunch in the Well-being Centre.
There is a tremendous amount of work involved behind the scenes, and their care, hard work and commitment are at the heart of everything we offer.
So this week, we want them to know just how much they are appreciated too.
A service worth celebrating – and protecting
Meals on Wheels Week is an important opportunity to highlight why community meal services matter and the difference they make to people's lives.
They support good nutrition and hydration.
They help people maintain their independence.
They provide regular social contact.
They can help combat loneliness and isolation.
They provide reassurance.
And they can help spot concerns before they develop into a crisis.
Alongside this, services such as our frozen meal range give people even more flexibility, helping ensure there is always a comforting, nutritious meal close at hand.
That really is More Than Just a Meal.
This Meals on Wheels Week, everyone at Age Concern Sandwich would like to celebrate our customers, our wonderful kitchen team and, in particular, every one of our brilliant Volunteer Delivery Drivers.
Thank you for every meal cooked, every journey made, every door knocked on, every frozen meal prepared, every smile shared and every few minutes spent having a chat.
You are what makes this service so special.
Happy Meals on Wheels Week!
